Caravanserais — Ancient Hotels of the Silk Road
Caravanserais were vital infrastructure elements of the Great Silk Road. These roadside inns provided travelers and merchants with shelter, food, and safety during long crossings through deserts and mountains. Several of these unique structures have been preserved in Uzbekistan.
Famous Caravanserais
Rabat-i Malik
Located between Samarkand and Bukhara, Rabat-i Malik is one of the best-preserved caravanserais from the 11th century. Its majestic portal with carved brick decoration still impresses travelers today. Caravans carrying silk, spices, and precious stones once stopped here.
Sardoba — Desert Water Reservoirs
Along the caravan routes, sardobas were built — underground water reservoirs with domed roofs that collected and stored rainwater. These engineering marvels were essential for the survival of caravans in arid regions.
Modern Discoveries
Archaeologists continue to discover remains of caravanserais along ancient routes. Each discovery helps us better understand the organization of Silk Road trade and the daily life of medieval travelers.
