Traveling through Central Asia is an adventure that requires preparation. Over years of work, we've gathered invaluable experience and share practical tips that will make your trip to Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan comfortable and unforgettable.
Best Time to Travel
Ideal seasons are spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). During this time, temperatures are comfortable (+20-28°C), cities are full of greenery, and there aren't too many tourists. In spring, you can catch the poppy blooms in the foothills and the Navruz holiday.
Summer (June-August) is very hot: +35-45°C. If traveling in summer, plan walks for morning and evening, rest during the day. Winter is mild but unpredictable — sudden cold spells are possible.
What to Bring
Comfortable shoes are essential. You'll walk many kilometers through historical complexes with uneven surfaces. A hat and sunscreen are mandatory even in spring.
For visiting mosques and holy sites, women will need a scarf and clothing covering shoulders and knees. For men, pants instead of shorts are enough. Bring light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics.
Money and Payments
In Uzbekistan, the national currency is som (UZS). You can exchange dollars or euros at banks and exchange offices. Visa and MasterCard are accepted at major hotels and restaurants, but cash is still relevant at bazaars and small establishments.
In Turkmenistan, the currency is manat (TMT). Exchange is only possible at official exchange points. International cards practically don't work — bring cash dollars.
Communication and Internet
A local SIM card in Uzbekistan is inexpensive, mobile internet covers most tourist places. Operators: Beeline, Ucell, Uzmobile. Wi-Fi is available in hotels and cafes.
In Turkmenistan, internet is more difficult: speed is low, many sites are blocked. We recommend downloading maps and necessary information offline in advance.
Health and Safety
Central Asia is a safe region for tourists. Local residents are friendly and hospitable. Standard precautions: don't drink tap water, wash fruits and vegetables, use sunscreen.
We recommend getting travel insurance covering medical expenses. Pharmacies are in every city, but bring specific medications with you.
Cultural Features
Hospitality is the most important value. An invitation for tea or to someone's home is a sign of respect; refusing is impolite. Remove shoes when entering a home. Don't photograph people without permission.
Bargaining at bazaars is part of the culture. Start at half the named price and gradually meet in the middle. It's not just savings but a way of communicating.
Transportation
Between Uzbekistan's cities, it's convenient to travel by Afrosiyob high-speed train (Tashkent-Samarkand-Bukhara). Book tickets online in advance. To Khiva — domestic flights or comfortable bus.
In Turkmenistan, transport is organized through a tour operator. We provide comfortable transport with driver and air conditioning.
